[Gimp-user] How do I insert text?

Hi everyone,

As hard as I try to follow tutorials etc, I can't see text when I try to add it
to a photo.

The Help file within Gimp suggests that if I select the Text tool and click on
an area of the canvas, I should see text as soon as I start typing.

The text comes up in the "Layers - Brushes" sidebar and I can see a cursor
moving in the text box on the canvas, but I see no text on the canvas at all.

What am I doing wrong?
