They could be using an additional APPn marker. Maybe there's a reason
why those are called 'application-specific', though, even with that
widespread agreement on what APP0 and APP1 are used for.

Maybe GIMP should just store its own application-specific metadata in
any image format out there, seems to be common practice :)
