[Gimp-user] background question

Hi

I am trying to remove the background of an image I have scanned of a Newspaper.
The paper was thin and the back side of the paper is visible on the image.
Is there an easy way to remove this?

The reverse image is also visible over the main image I am looking at (the image is a News Headline, not a 
Picture.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
