I tested this and it works for me to.
All you have to do is regularly clear the undo history.

As for the memory stuff.
I have 16GB of ram.
Tile cache 4GB
Undo history 8GB
new image size 8GB

But I'm not using enough resources for memory to be a problem.

I don't know if this is significant, but I have disabled the pagefile, guess I could try enabling it and see 
if that helps.
