The goal would be that it allows for multiple layers with slight variation in colors, To make it as if its animated by shifting colors through the curve.

Could you add the ability to create multiple layers in the color curve gui.
So create layer from current preview.

It works best when you also explain your use scenario :)

I would assume that you want poor man's non-destructive editing as in
'work on a separate layer'. But I could be wrong.
