[gedit-list] Forcing a document save

What's the correct method to incite a document to save itself, from Python?

This old posting said that, at least a few years ago, (document).save() should never be called directly: http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/VvJ6VqPHtyxD5Ims2izb

It says that there was a preferred call, but which was then unexposed to Python: gedit.commands.save()

Is this functionality available yet, or is there another/better way to do a save?
