My LMDE just upgraded me to gedit 3.4.2 and I hafta say that what has been done to the 'find' box seems to me to be positively crazy. Is there some way to restore the older, sane, functionality? If there is no way to get the find box to stay open until *I* close it, then I'll be downgrading. Which is the latest version that does *NOT* behave that way? Who thinks these things up? Or is it just me that things boxes should stay open until closed by the user?
------------------------------ When learning the keyboard shortcuts, the incremental search is quite convenient to use. See help -> contents in the menu, or press F1. If you still don't like, try the Commander plugin, it also contains a search command. Or use the search and replace dialog. There are also other search and replace third-party plugins. Thanks S?bastien, What do you mean by 'incremental search'? I just want the box to stay open and not need to be recalled every few seconds. This new behaviour is something I've never seen in any program before.

Incremental search means searching as you type, without needing to press Enter to initiate a search:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incremental_search

It's a common user interface technique in lots of programs, both in the GNOME world and elsewhere.

However, as you suggest, the 'Search' box does stay open, so that's fine. What is the 'Commander' plugin? It isn't listed in Editor>Preferences>Plugins.

The Commander plugin is found in the gedit-plugins package - if you install that, you'll see it in Editor->Preferences->Plugins.

One more thing, I have no 'help' here. 'F1' gives: "There was an error displaying the help. The specified location is not supported." Can I fix that manually?

Not sure why that's not working on your system, but you could always browse the help here:
