eh gedit downloaded with $apt-get source gedit   but gedit edit the code with tools that I have to compile it? or should do?

Finally you will have to submit patches with git, so clone the code from git.gnome.org 
I haven't worked with the GTK source. I subscribed to the list sometime back when I did some minor tweaks. Thats all I know about it
