[gedit-list] "too many open files" error

Recently I often get a "too many open files" error message when trying to save a 
file.

I only have one instance of gedit open throughout the day and I rarely have more 
than 10 tabs open at once.

Only thing I can do is close and restart gedit, which wouldn't be so bad if I 
wouldn't have to copy all my file modifications into a different editor first.

System is Ubuntu 9.04. I don't see any other applications warning me about too 
many open files.

Any idea what is happening here?
