Thank you for this. It was a big help. For the time being I'm going to
use it with a slight tweak (added a ~ to the end of the filename so its
hidden).
My next question: Is there any way to open 2 documents side by side for
analysis? Kind of like a diff between the two?
If you open a second document, perhaps an archived version, you'll
get another tab in the gedit window. If you then right click on the
tab you'll get an option to move that tab to a new window. With line
numbers enabled you have a fighting chance of comparing the files
manually.
the gedit tool needs an option to ask for a new window! How about?
/usr/bin/gedit -nw -geometry l,r,w,h $HOME/Documents/mymanuscript &
I will get around to executing the UNIX tool diff in my perl script
but when is akin to asking the US Congress. I do think diffs between
the currently saved document and the one on the screen would be nice.
Diffs between current and a previous archive are also pretty simple
once you get used to the left and right arrows of the diff output.
There's also the possibility of saving only the differences and
arranging to apply patches on request. That might make sense for
really big files.
