I found the plug-in. It wasn't in my default installation.
You are right. The new line characters (LF, CR) are not displayed. I'll check how can I make it.

Choose Edit > Preferences > Plugins
Select Draw Spaces from the list

You can toggle the display of whitespace from the gedit menu
Choose View > Show white space.
