"Save the changes to document "new file 1" before closing?" Gedit is a wonderful program that I use all the time. Its many great features such as: its simple design, color highlighting, and quick loading make it a wonderful text editor. However, there is a glaring problem with the save and close dialog box that appears when you try to close an unsaved file. The choices are "Close without Saving" (The option almost never wanted), Cancel (The option sometimes used if you closed on accident), and Save (The option almost always wanted). The box does a wonderful job of highlighting the correct choice, and making it the default for the enter key, but the boxes are backwards. By backwards I mean for the best user experience the default choice should always be on the left. In most cultures we read left to right, which means we always start on the left, and then only scan to the right as we don't find what we are looking for. By reversing these dialog boxes, it forces the user to "scan" past the two most obvious choices before finding the correct choice. When users are too quick, they hit the disaster button, on the left by accident! The "accept" button being to the left and cancel to the right is a well established usability guideline that I think Gedit should follow. Thank you for your time, Gregory Boggs Humhost |
