Note that you need to use the "old_plugins" cvs branch, since we have
deleted most of the files in the module to make place for the new
plugins.
seahorse includes a gedit plugin too (though obviously is integrated
with their stuff)

In particular in new_mdi we have a small python script in the tools
directory which generates the scheleton code for a plugin starting from
a template: it would be cool to add an option to make the script
generate the build system for an external plugin.
