[gedit-list] Problems with gedit install

Hi.

I reported a bug in gEdit 0.5.4 and was promptly advised by email to
download the latest version of gEdit (0.7.0).

I did so, but I'm having problems installing it. These are the
instructions for installation:

Ok, to install gEdit:
./configure

make
su root
make install

Then you can type:
gedit
anywhere and it will run! Woo! Isn't that great!

I got these from http://gedit.pn.org/download.html and followed them.
The problem occurs after typing "make" and hitting Enter. When I do
that, I get a bunch of files that get created in a new directory, along
with the following error message:

make: *** No targets. Stop

My questions are:

1) What does this mean and how can I fix it? (Yes, you can probably
guess
I'm a Linux newbie.) I'd really like to use gEdit, and would be if I
didn't keep running into problems.

2) What do I do about all these files that the failed install process
created? Can I just delete them all or must I use an uninstall command
or what?

3) Does the installation (or part-installation) of gedit alter any
configuration scripts elsewhere in Linux? (I.e. that I'd have to change
after an uninstall or deletion of gedit files.)

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Regards,

Paul Bailey.
