This sounds like a bug in the email app you are using on Marshmallow, 
to be honest. The characters above are classic corrupted Unicode, and 
some mailers will try to show it, some (like Geary) will drop it.

I'd suggest using the same version of the same email app on both 
versions of Android for testing, one that is known to handle Unicode 
properly, so you can take that variable out of the equation.
