It does currently make the cultural assumption that the user knows what
the historical meaning of the word "spam" is, which many people don't -
hence it isn't great.
I would suggest to use a simple hexagon with a centered exclamation
mark (similarly to the spam button in Gmail).
That'll probably work well, so would something like the standard road
warning triangle[0]. Ideally, which ever icon is uses should
communicate "warning" more than "attention".
Note also that the folder list may get reworked for 0.13 and may no
longer use icons at all, per the mockup in Bug 737862[0]. That's a fair
way off though, and it's not yet set in stone, so fixing the Spam icon
for the moment is still worth doing.
