Not at the moment.

The next major release (0.12) will use the default avatar icon from 
your icon theme, and it will also be possible to hide it with a some 
custom GTK theme CSS.

As for the using Google Contacts, the plan is to use libfolks to source 
avatars, so if you have your Google contacts hooked up using GNOME 
Online Accounts or another method supported by libfolks, then Geary 
should pick them up. That enhancement is covered bu Bug 713347
