Re: [gdm-list] gdm-list Digest, Vol 119, Issue 1

Dear John and Sara, thanks for the detailed explanation. I will try to ask on the forums if somebody can help me with this issue.
I think I do not miss any of the scripts, probably is something with the config only. I tried yesterday to launch as gdm user the
/usr/libexec/gdm-simple-greeter and it showed up the greeter, but without any users and so on. Therefore I suppose it is a complete
misconfiguration.

So I will try to rebuild it from scratch to see what is going on, our script was ported from gdm 2 and with gdm2 was working ok, but
since gdm3 is a rewrite it certainly doesnt work as gdm2 did. therefore will start by checking simple things first.

Thanks for now.

gdm should decide whether to show a host chooser after X startup but before you see anything "before light" (which is what xdm does - before login not after, since every X11 display host has it's own login of course)

insure you can telnet to localhost (or out), insure X ports are not firewalled locally.  redhat used to use a --no-tcp setting that blocked packets locally but NOT remotely (local used socket).  insure your using socket, and /tmp/.X11 (stale session files) are "cleaned" by /etc/init.d/?Xstuff?

gdm starts and listens for X connections, X in turn (if started with -query) looks for host running gdm (however, settings files may alter that).  finally: when gdm gets an X connection it starts a new X session , runs greeter, (it decides if greeter runs, if the binary is present and asked to run by settings), once a connection is made to the right host/X11 server by greeter, it shows a login (if you are not setup for "no login default user"), and then after longin launches (gnome3 or what have you desktop).

so there you go, your issue is likely port blockage, stale session files, or gdm is not running before X (your gnome destkop startup script is missing?), or you didnt select the option to show 'chooser' at startup

personally i've never seen gdm have an issue not showing remote connections (many years ago) it seemed to do that always, and it's a matter if point and click to see other hosts (assuming no ports are blocked).

you should ask the question on a web forum (phorum) for your linux/bsd distribution (ie, redhat, freebsd, debian, et al) because this is where people are who wrote the startup scripts, know where they are, and know of where to set certain settings like "show chooser before/after login".

Good luck and happy 4th!

Hi all, I would like to understand why does the greeter page doesnt show up.

I'built gdm 3.16.4 on my slackware system, as Im the maintainer of dropline
gnome, a gnome desktop for Slackware.

My problem is that gdm builds up well and starts also well, at least I
think so.
The thing is that if I start it from the console its nearly same as I would
do startx.

The gnome-shell shows up logged in with the gdm user. It doesnt at all ask
me for any password nor I have the chance to input or select the user.

Probably is just a configuration issue, but I have no idea on where to
start.

Can somebody guide me on how to start solving this issue ?
