Hello list,

hopefully i am right here to write a bug report?
(also have a question to gnome desktop with gdm (2) )

Using debian in testing; xorg 7.7; xserver 1.16; after last
update with xserver and gdm my xwindow crashes when doing the
following:

1. Mouse on the upper left corner to go in "overview mode"
2. Trying to move a application window into a new virtual window
(right side)

The errors appears since gdm using this nice circles on the right
side to switch between application browser windows

The following log appears:

Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: Fensterverwalter-Warnung:Log
level 6: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X Window System error.
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: This probably reflects a bug
in the program.
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: The error was 'BadCursor
(invalid Cursor parameter)'.
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: (Details: serial 38018
error_code 6 request_code 95 (core protocol) minor_code 0)
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: (Note to programmers:
normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: that is, you will receive the
error a while after causing it.
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: To debug your program, run it
with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: variable to change this
behavior. You can then get a meaningful
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: backtrace from your debugger
if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Jul 25 19:15:34 ionno gnome-session[1579]: x-session-manager[1579]:
WARNING: Application 'gnome-shell.desktop' killed by signal 5

(2) My question is also the following: I have installed gdm. Now debian package manager shows me that gnome as well as gnome-core is _not_ installed? Is it part of gdm also? (because i use gnome
desktop).

Regards
jko

ok that's a debian question. gnome has many "debian packages" their is a gnome-common (or gnome) package that installs them all. gnome-session (probably a pkg) and gdm are two of these. i'm unsure if gnome3 was split up as much as gnome people really classically didn't like it when packages prevented gnome from installing fully.

So. you may want to start over - no gnome files anywhere in /etc/ or /usr/ (you may need a complete re-install)

--------------------------
NOW the cursor question may be related to your 1/2 install situation. or could be a bug.

if not check /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or if you don't have one, one is made fresh everytime you start X)

it allows a parameter for you video card for using hardware or software cursor

yet another. your situation is not fully known. i don't know if you have ability to go to other virtual desktops using key strokes instead of mouse. that's kinda important to know. for all i know their is no support for virtual desktop due to the way X was started and gnome simply closes on the first error of what would be many more (trying to access something that isn't there).

"bad cursor parameter" may mean incompatibility wrong arg (mixed up binaries/libs) but i doubt it - debian is pretty fool proof as to that. and don't forget if you've had disk errors or download errors maybe the gnome image lost a bit: again in debain that's usually no longer an issue, it's checked for somewhat. "bad cursor" just as easily means "who darn thing is goofed, first error i see is no cursor"

well hope that helps and moves things further along good luck !
