Ray,
Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, it did not eliminate the messages.
In fact, I had previously tried removing
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop entirely from the
/etc/xdg/autostart directory. It seems the greeter is running polkit
ahead of when the user even authenticates.
