Being the original designer of gdm makes it kind of fun to complain:
1) yes the slide lock thing is really annoying 2) you can use esc I
found out after somewhat angrily hitting the keyboard because ... 3)
It took me about 1 minute to figure out how to unlock this thing since
it wasn't obvious what those arrows were telling me.  (This at a time
when I really really needed to use my computer). 4) Wow, is the lock
screen in gdm now ... that's where it should have been long time ago,
but I never got around to it when maintaining gdm (I assume gdm
nowdays has nothing to do with my version of gdm).

It's fun to use GNOME again after a long time (have gone back on my
new work desktop thanks to the availability of the classic mode in
gnome-shell without which I really really can't function).  I feel I
ought to use GNOME out of "patriotic duty," so I hope I don't have an
XFCE relapse.

By the way what is the point of the "shield".  I mean there is not
much possibility of accidentally hitting something as on a touchscreen
device with possibly no further password you have to enter.  Being a
vi user I am used to hitting "esc" whenever I want to do something,
but I don't think that's universal.  So besides superfluous graphics
and confusing the first time user, what is it supposed to do?  Could
there perhaps be words on the screen telling the user what to do?  A
few words is worth a thousand pictures sometimes.  Such as "Press ESC
to log in", or some such.  IIRC windows NT used to have this (I mean a
sentence to that effect) when they required ctrl-alt-del to log in
(which I suspect was there to annoy any linux sysadmins having servers
connected to same keyboard/screen as NT servers)
