Enable=true in the [debug] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf might
provide some insight.

One common problem here is /etc/pam.d/gdm-welcome being improperly
configured for the distro.

You might also check syslog /var/log/messages and see if there's any
good tidbits in there.
