Note that .desktop formatted files in the /usr/share/xsessions directory
control which sessions are available to the user.
Also note that GDM waits until you select a username before it will
display the option to select the session. The option is shown in the
lower panel as a combo box. Before you select a username, you will
not see an option to select the session.
If there is only one .desktop file in this directory, GDM will not
display a "Session" choice to the user and simply assume it will log
the user into this only session. So, if you aren't seeing the option
in the GUI, this may be why.

how do I change the default session for gdm 2.26 for new users on
their first login?
Right now it always shows Gnome Session as default. But I don't want
Gnome to be default for new users.
Is there some magic to set it to something else?
