You say you are using GDM 2.20.x, so could use the Init script hook.

You could also try using the Background Program configuration options:

http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.20/configuration.html.en#greetersection

If you were using a newer version of GDM, you would probably use the
autostart mechanism, which is documented here:

http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.26/configuration.html.en#autostart
