this was my last attempt but did not work:
also tried with timed login.

In gdm.conf:

AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=/usr/local/sbin/AutoLoginUser.sh %d |

script AutoLoginUser.sh called
with parameter display name
