Slow startup

I've noticed that GDM takes quite a long time to start up on my box compared to a "bare" X session. A little investigation reveals that GDM is issuing more than 20000 (!) GetModeLine requests with each startup. Each request has the same arguments and retuned values.
How can I change this behaviour?
