I first suspected that too; however, after setting a "xset q" in gdm's
".../Init/Default" script I can see that the Xserver (i.e. Xsun) is
using the same set of fonts that it's using when running GNOME 2.8.
gdmgreeter is just not displaying the text on the GUI login screen;
however, if you click, for example, on the "labeless" session icon on a
theme like "circles" everything in the box appears to being rendered
correctly. Also when using gdmlogin everything appears fine.
