How do I run a program while gdm is running?  I assume I can't do that
so I logged in to gnome (via gdm) as root and ran the commands from
there (both of the below are on same system, same monitor, same
XF86Config file except for the mode setting specifying either 1280x1024
or 640x480):

xdpyinfo | grep resolution gives:

for 1280x1024:	95x96 dots per inch
for 640x480:	47x45 dots per inch

This seems to make sense.  The lower resolution has a lower dpi and the
factor is the same, i.e. 1024/480 == 96/45

I have attached the output of xrdb -query (the output is identical on
both resolutions!?!).

It contains the line:

Xft.dpi:	96.000000

It this the root of our problems?  If so, how can I change it?
