yes.  /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf has 

[xdmcp]
#.....
Enable=1

is gdm running properly?  I don't know.  how do i tell that?  ps -waux | grep 
gdm shows 2 instances of gdm-binary running.  any other hints?
