Hello
Thanks very much for your help. Tried changing the AlwaysRestartServer
key but it did nothing (BTW, XDM, KDM, etc works fine, its just GDM that
causes the problem, but GDM's better than the others ;)
Anyway downloaded version 2.4.1.6 and tried to compile it, but I get:
gcc -g -O2 -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wmissing-prototypes
-Wmissing-declarations -o test-ve-config test-ve-config.o

Strange thing is that I was using Debian's apt-get testing version of
GDM, and didn't update it. Also my home PC had the same problem
occuring, at around the same time, even tho I didn't update it either or
change any settings. The version I have installed on both PC's are
2.4.1.3-2
Thanks very much for your help again
Cheers - Piers

Hello all
Am having a problem with GDM. I installed it before and it worked just
fine. Then suddenly (well it probably was something I did) one day, GDM
wouldnt work. The computer would boot up, and start X just fine, see
the grey/white background but it would then "switch" screens and see
black for a couple seconds and a message would come up:
"There already appears to be an X server running on display :0. Should
I try another display number? If you answer no, I will attempt to start
the server on :0 again (You can change consoles by pressing Crtl-Alt
plus a function key, such as Crtl-Alt-F7 to go to console 7. X Servers
usually run on consoles 7 and higher)"
When I press no, the same thing happens again. If I press yes, the same
thing happens again, but the error message will now show :1 instead of
:0. Pressing Crtl-Alt-F7 would show the grey background and the cross
mouse pointer.
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks very much for your help in advance
Try changing the AlwaysRestartServer key in the configuration file. Failing
that I would suggest upgrading GDM. Some bugs which could cause such
behaviour have been quite recently fixed. Either try the newest stable
release (the 2.4.1.x series) or the newest development relese (the 2.4.2.x
series), both should compile and work with anything GNOME2.0 and up.
