Authentication failed

I just updated gdm on my debian box, I download the
rpm's(gdm-2.2.2.1-ximian.8) and used alien to change them to debs. 
Whenever I go to login, I get an error that says "authentication failed",
but the funny thing is that I get the error after typing in the username,
it does not give me a chance to type in a password.  I have tried having
the faces so that I can click on one and then type in the password, but I
still have no chance to type in the password and get the same message.  I
have also tried having a user login automatically and the same
"authentication failed" error is still there.  I also switch it from
ctrl+alt+F8 to ctrl+alt+F7 thinking maybe somewhere it was being denied,
this still did not fix the problem, is there something else that I can do
to fix it?
KDM, XDM, and my old GDM all allow me to login, but I can't with gdm
gdm-2.2.2.1-ximian.8.   How can I fix this?
