Well, it was definately in the ~/.gconfd/saved_state file.  Blew that 
away and my problem with it taking over the CPU went away.  NOW when I 
start Gnome, I get LOTS of nautilus windows, hundreds.  And upon 
checking my logs:

Mar  3 17:48:12 blackhole gconfd (robert-759): starting (version 2.2.0), 
pid 759                        user 'robert'
Mar  3 17:48:12 blackhole gconfd (robert-753): starting (version 2.2.0), 
pid 753                        user 'robert'

Mutiple of the daemon starting, which causes:

/home/robert/.gconfd/lock/ior': probably another process has the lock, 
or your operating system has NFS file locking misconfigured (Resource 
temporarily unavailable)
Mar  3 17:49:41 blackhole gconfd (robert-774): Failed to get lock for 
daemon, exiting: Failed to lock '/home/robert/.gconfd/lock/ior':
