Xcomposite now _required_ for metacity 2.22.0 ?

So I don't have the composite extension. I can't get the composite
extension short of compiling my own xserver. There's a
'--disable-composite' configure option available but it doesn't seem to
actually disable the compositor.

Am I completely out of luck now ? Do I need to backrev metacity to
2.20.x ?
