Peter,

Problems like this are often associated with errant libtool .la files. 

(1) Identify the .la files that contain libfreetype
[grep for the word freetype]

(2) For each file that contains libfreetype, inspect the file to see
whether the GARNOME or Slackware version is being accessed.
