FWIW, in the jhbuild, they don't use 0.5.8.1 because there are a lot of
issues. jhbuild still uses 0.5.7.1. I'm no hal expert, but I was able to
get it compiled without those errors without the slack patch. However, hal
0.5.8.1 caused problems and the hal-runner, required for many things does
not load properly during hald startup.

AFAIK, hal has a lot of issues and I personally wish it would just regress
to 0.5.7 and be done with it.
