Thank you *so* much! It worked!

When I've got time to experiment, I'll see if I can narrow it down to the 
actual culprit. FWIW, for some reason, SUSE excluded that item in the default 
menu, so I ran 'gnome-volume-properties' from a shell to edit the settings.
