Sure, freetype never has been on ftp.gnome.org AFAIK.

$ grep MASTER bootstrap/freetype/Makefile
MASTER_SITES = http://dl.sourceforge.net/freetype/

Freetype is hosted on SourceForge. The fact that you get the 404 on
f.g.o simply is, cause f.g.o is the default download server. Used always
if there is no MASTER_SITES specified or as a fallback as last resort.

The real problem for you is a SourgeForge one. SourceForge seems to have
issues with mirrors every now and then. If the download fails, just try
it again [1] -- at worst, try it again later.

This works, I just verified I can get the file.
