I can confirm this even with my older Garnome installation (2.8 based) where I
upgraded GIMP to latest stable version.

I've uninstalled Garnome's version of FreeType and upgraded (only freetype) to
2.1.7. Everything else was left intact.

Crossed fingers - and Gimp runs. As well as rest of my desktop. It's several
weeks since the upgrade and no crash occured.

Maybe the version number should be really bumped to 2.1.7 or later... why
not?
