If your version of X11 is the issue, you can build and install a newer
version under a separate root without corrupting your system. I have
done this on my PPC running YDL-4.0.1 [a FC2 clone ] in order to run
Xorg-6.8.2. It's easy to do. Here are the instructions for Xorg.

The business about creating a host.def file will also work for XFree. I
know that from first hand experience.
While you are at it, you might as well update gcc and python. Then you
should be good to go except for the kernel related stuff.
For what it's worth, I built garnome-2.11.91 using gcc-3.3.3. I also
used python-2.4.1, which I built and installed under /opt/python-2.4.
