problems with libgtk-x11 and pango??

Several programs seem to be having problems with libgtk-x11 and pango..
I've had gnome-panel crash everytime i try to pull up properties on
anything and i just noticed that gnome-background-properties will not
also load.. 

Here is the general error i keep getting.. 

gnome-background-properties: relocation error:
/usr/local/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol:
pango_find_base_dir

Any ideas? Thanks...
