Looking at http://pdx.freedesktop.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/xc/lib/GL/?root=xorg
it seems as though Xorg is a copy of XFree86 - is that so?
Looking at more of the www.freedesktop.org text stuff, it seems as though
the idea is to slip another layer of more specified software in between the
hardware and a real desktop like Gnome and KDE - with the goal to
standardize some of the low level aspects of desktops. Is that it?
Standardize - like make drag and drop work the same over all applications
that would reasonably support or need DnD.
Or make the semantics of cut and paste be the same over all applications
and perhaps even user configurable.
I really like the 20 yr old Macintosh cut and paste - which was
standardized over all applications by fiat from the beginning - something
that is difficult under open-source volunteer rules.
Rather than fiat, it is necessary to provide a layer where the user (and
developer) can choose a semantics without ruffling the feathers of other
developers with different ideas.
Is this what freedesktop.org is about?
