Dependency nightmare

Greetings!
I have been playing around with garnome to install 2.5.92 gnome into my
environment. I am trying to do a clean install, such that the
dependency libs are located in only one place on the machine (/usr). I
have latest and greatest gconf, glib, .. installed in /usr.
When I compile desktop/ in garnome, I see that it picks up gconf, glib,
gtk, etc.. in my /usr/lib, which is good. However, I see a lot of
things being installed into my garnome/etc, garnome/share, that probably
shouldn't be there. For example, the schemas that get installed should
probably be installed in /etc/gconf instead of garnome/etc/gconf. So
what exactly am I supposed to do here? I read that one can add this
path explicitly in my ~/.gconf.path, so that'll probably fix this
dependency, but what about the many other things that are installed
here? Do I copy them over manually to /etc? Here are the list (so far)
of directories being created in garnome/etc:

drwxrwxr-x 3 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 00:14 gconf
-rw-r--r-- 1 jason jason 38 Jun 6 00:22 scrollkeeper.conf
drwxrwxr-x 2 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 00:32 gtk-2.0
drwxrwxr-x 5 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 10:55 X11

drwxr-xr-x 7 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 12:30 gdm
drwxr-xr-x 3 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 12:30 security
drwxr-xr-x 2 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 12:30 pam.d
drwxrwxr-x 3 jason jason 4096 Jun 6 12:51 sound

Thanks for any help!
Jason
