I had this problem in the beginning too. If you are sure that you've
installed gnome-icon-theme and hicolor-theme, you also need to set the
XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable in your garnome-session script like
so:

XDG_DATA_DIRS=$GARNOME/share

Then add the XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable to the list of variables
you export. Once you log in and log out, things should be fine.
