Padlock icons on desktop

Since installing gnome 2.6 via Luke Yelavich's 2.6.0 core packages
archive, for one user (out of many) on one machine (out of three), I get
a 'padlock' icon next to device/folder icons on the nautilus drawn
desktop. The user has full access to the devices (home folder, writable
floppy etc). 

Anyone any ideas why this happens (linux 2.6.5, largely self maintained
'distro') gnome 2.6 installed  in /usr/local.
