Garnome 2.5.92: Xft backend error when building gtk+

I installed all the development libraries mentioned on the Garnome page.
However, building fails for gtk+ with the following message :

checking For sufficiently new FreeType (at least 2.0.1)... yes
configure: error: Pango 1.2.0 and Xft backend is required for x11 target

Trying to understand the configure script does not help me. I found on
the Web a discussion about this matter in the building of Pango, but
should not Garnome solve it automatically?
