gdk_pixbuf fails to compile... parse error in VERSION script - libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.ver:1:

Hello,

     I have just run the `make install` and well this is the only error
I get.  I have also tried manually to configure ; make  and it reports
the same errors.  Does anyone have any luggestions as to what I need to
do to get it to wark?  I think I am missing something important.  I am
not running any specific distro.  I have built my system using the
"Linux From Scratch" method.  I can attach a copy of the error directly
or copy paste if that helps.
