libtool annoyance

ok.  built various earlier versions of garnome into /usr/opt/garnome. 
built latest into /usr/opt/garnome2.  eventually deleted
/usr/opt/garnome.  however, trying to build some things after deleting
the directory, libtool wants to use libs from /usr/opt/garnome/lib. 
anyone know how to get around this?  i have run ldconfig, i have no idea
where libtool is finding these libs or why it thinks they exist.
