GDK_USE_XFT just controls the anti-aliasing of text. It's perfectly safe
to leave it set to 0- previous gnome's didn't turn it on either. So
garnome without xft is probably still better than what you had before.
It's just a shame that KDE can get this right, but the gnome developers
can't.

I'm happy sticking with gnome (and garnome), but there are lessons to be
learned here.
