Newbie needs help

Hi my system is red hat 7.3
I think I have managed to get as far as trying to start gnome2.
I got the gtk error mentioned in another thread to which the reply was don't
launch it that way.
Very confusing since the instructions TELL you to launch it that way.
The downloaded garnome.tar.bz2 file went into my home/roger folder.
The gnome-session file seems to be in usr/bin.
I ran with defaults and made no changes to config files.
Can someone talk me through getting the new gnome working.
A reminder on where to stop X starting on boot up would help save tome as
well.
I said I was new at this.
