Fidgety taskbar

I have successfully compiled the latest Garnome but the taskbar acts
quite
erratic: changing from one workspace to another, the thing's width
across
the bottom just changes for no reason. 

Also, I can't seem to make the number of workspaces in the switcher
remain
as 4 across sessions even though I save my current setup before logging

out.
Is it a garnome thing or a gnome thing?
